She toasts every party by name before they go down. She remembers what they liked to drink. The affection is real, and the outcome no longer troubles her.

The Public Woman

Ysolde Vane is the alluring, magnetic sorceress who has gathered legendary heroes at the edge of Cairnfall for a grand expedition — and who, with those heroes, recruits bands of hapless novices to do the hard parts for them. She is warm to the recruits, genuinely fond of them, the way one grows fond of employees one intends to spend.

She never lies. She strategically withholds. This is worse.

The Name

Nobody calls her Widowmaker to her face. It is bar talk — the thing prospectors mutter into their third drink while watching another band of hopefuls sign her ledger. The town coined it from arithmetic: expeditions go down under her patronage, and expeditions do not come back up.

Role in Play

  • The Dealer. In-fiction voice of mission framing and the post-run fairness ledger — she tells the survivors what was really down there, over a drink, because she already knew.
  • The Employer. Anchor of the hiring loop: heroes post contracts, novices take them, survivors get remembered.
